Austin, Texas was my home for 30 years. I moved there from San Diego in 1970 at age 24 to study philosophy of science in The University’s graduate program and stayed in Austin to work in publishing, to play seriously with photography, to marry three times, and to let Jesus find me. I still think of it as my home town.
In 1970, The University was already huge — 45,000 undergraduates — but the state government was still small and the city was still a sleepy place except for a rowdy hippie counter culture inspired by the possibility of peace and love, not to mention live music, free sex, and inexpensive drugs.
Fifty years later, Austin has become part of Silicon Valley and has gained an international reputation. Even so, it still feels like home to me. Photo is of a pedestrian bridge over Lady Bird Lake.
