One reason I celebrate Christmas is to acknowledge the mystery of the spiritual become material; God made manifest. The highest spirituality — beyond our comprehension and beyond our proper naming — has been made individual, human, and cuddly: Jesus, a newborn baby in a manger. This is a theological concept so strange many cannot comprehend it, much less believe it. Inspiration does not argue. Five inches of snow fell last week without a breath of air to disturb its descent, the earth transformed into a dazzling wonderland. This beauty — like all incarnations of grace — was not a conundrum but a delight — even when I had to start shoveling.
