Last week, leading a discussion about taming the ten thousand things, I said, “The world wants us to be happy.” It was a bold, reckless statement coming from someone usually so careful in his metaphysical claims, yet it captures my fundamental optimism, fickle as it may be in practice. Reality is not a clenched fist coming for my face but rather a gentle hand guiding a blind man forward. “What’s possible?” is my favorite question. Even while I acknowledge reality’s disappointments, I yet wonder what untouched blessings are there waiting. There are symphonies just outside our hearing, celestial splendors just outside our sight. Even if nothing is heard or seen, that only says we do not yet know what good God next will provide.
