Passionate but Reasonable

PHOTO PRAYER 2024-05 —

God help me, I am not passionate about politics or social justice, but I do admire people who are — just as long as they are not dogmatic. Give me Gandhi. Give me the mature Malcolm X. Give me speakers who are passionate but reasonable, people eager to convince me, not eager to attack me and those like me when we remain unconvinced. Those rigid people are my enemies, their minds made up, like beds never slept in.

Jesus said, “Love your enemies and those who persecute you.” What a challenge! When Pogo said, “We have met the enemy and he is us,” that was a slogan for Earth Day 1970. I like it. I can pray for my enemies. I am often my worst enemy. God help me and those like me, especially when we think we are reasonable and our enemies are not!

I hope your hand is healing, Danny. My shoulder surgery is, so it must be the Lord is looking after us. Your comments, both on this short mail, and the longer words on the church’s site, are profound. And I sincerely mean that.
