The high-flying formations of Canada geese still delight my 79-year-old eyes. Often heard before seen, honking their way across the sky, they seem wild and free. Me? I am rooted, rooted for now, still living in the same house my wife and I purchased 25 years ago. I do not take stability for granted. Even now, I know forces over which I have little control may be in motion, winds that may soon send me flying. That’s life. It certainly was my early life, homes in nine states my first thirteen years, my family the meaningful constant. It makes me want to pray that, when I am again uprooted and airborne, I will rise up honking, giving thanks to God, eagerly looking forward in wonder toward the next place I will be asked to love and call home.

Dear Danny. My eyes and ears also stir in wonder to the sound and sight of the geese and frankly all flocks of birds that take to the skies in mass this time of year. I’ll even pull over on the road just to watch them as they blacken the sky. Their numbers and strength in formation as they gather to go south or wherever for the winter is Biblical. And writing this causes me to wonder … do I notice the same en mass movement as they return? -). Next year I’ll have to keep a discerning eye out!

Hi Danny. Lovely photo and reflection. We live next to an enormous park in New Orleans and the same horned-owl couple return every November. I love hearing their hoots all night long.
