On Day 17 of our 39-day, 8,006-mile trip around the USA, we only got 40 miles further west because we took a side trip to visit Bandera Volcano and Ice Caves. The land south of Grants, New Mexico, is full of extinct volcanoes. Eleven can be seen from one viewpoint. This photo is from one of the ice caves we visited on April 8. At the bottom of collapsed lava tubes, water accumulates and stays frozen all year long. If you look up, all you see is sky surrounded by rock. Note the snow in the lower right.
