Day 5, Google Map Troubles

This day was the first of several when we abandoned our plan to leisurely drive across the USA on back roads. Instead, we took I-40 from Hillsborough, North Carolina to Asheville in a day.

Using Google Maps got us in trouble. This began when, after looking for restaurants in Winston-Salem, my wife decided she wanted to go to Chic-Fil-A, to a restaurant not far off the interstate highway. Soon we found ourselves on the campus of Winston-Salem State University. We found ourselves driving service roads behind buildings. Eventually we came to a loading dock. “This can’t be right,” we thought. It was right. The restaurant was in the student union and the loading dock was closest to it.

We decided on Plan B — go to a Bojangles restaurant instead. Excellent, friendly service and good chicken! Next to Bojangles was this blue house and red pickup. I liked the looks of it. It made me think someone has a comfortable home and a decent life.

Steve wrote: When my son Reed was completing his graduate degree at Wake Forest, the Bojangles near campus was his lunch spot of choice. He had his choice of great jobs after graduation and chose a global consulting firm in Philadelphia. “Off the beaten path” implies there’s one path.
