Day 32 of our 39-day, 8,006-mile, 23-state ramble across the USA was April 23, the first day of our drive back to the East Coast after leaving Las Vegas. My wife’s persistent cough was bad as ever. The medicine we were given did not help. So we decided to drive a lot each day, determined to get back home relatively quickly.
This day we drove northeast into Utah. The Virgin River Gorge was spectacular! We crossed and recrossed the border between Utah and Arizona, ending up in Kayenta. Along the way, we came close to Zion National Park and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, crossed the Colorado River just south of Glen Canyon Dam, and wound our way counter-clockwise around Navajo Mountain. We hoped to see roadrunners and UFOs. We actually saw tons of uplifted rock.
