Road builders are single minded — move people in powered vehicles safely and let others beware. Pedestrians and bicyclists live dangerously. And animals? We have a name for them. Roadkill.
Pity the poor tortoises of Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive just west of Las Vegas, Nevada. There are lots of signs asking drivers to watch for them. That is good. Tortoises like to crawl into the shade under parked automobiles, so there are signs warning people to look under their cars before driving off. That is good.
Silly me, I want more than warning signs. I imagine a civilization compatible with wild animals, a civilization that lets them thrive. I imagine lawns that encourage weeds, insects, and birds. I am so impractical!
