When my brother Bill was young, he developed a yearning for chocolate cream pie, so he saved his allowance and bought one. Our sister Delia asked for a slice. He said, “No!” Since then, for another sixty years, Delia would not let him forget it. The story became a running family joke, how stingy he was with his desserts, how badly he treated his sister.
On April 12, 2023, Delia got her piece of pie! She had joined my wife and me when we visited Bill and his family near San Diego. Out of the ice box came a piece of chocolate cream pie, just for her. As you can see, she was delighted. It is never too late to make amends.
(NOTE: “ice box” is still in my vocabulary from when I was very small and my family had an ice box instead of a refrigerator. I remember being fascinated by that block of ice cooling everything inside, no electricity needed.)
